Do Those Invisible Fences Work with Pugs?

Invisible electric fences can work with some pugs. However, they are not a good substitute for an owner's supervision. There are several reasons for that.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the longest lived dog was an Australian Cattle Dog named Bluey. The dog lived to be 29. This case was considered unusual since smaller dogs generally live longer. The chihuahua is actually the breed that tends to live the longest.

First of all, most invisible fences work because they detect a signal from a special collar on the pug. If the collar falls off or the batteries in the collar die without the owner's knowledge then the pug can easily escape.

Bloodhounds have dewlaps. What are dewlaps? They are strange looking, pendulous folds of skin on the back of the neck. They don't seem to serve any useful purpose to the bloodhound, but are rather interesting to look at.

Another problem is that some pugs may see something outside the fence line that gets them overly excited, such as a small animal. The pug might break through the invisible fence line when they are in an extremely excited state and then, after the feeling wears off, they might not want to come back because of the invisible fence.

The name Pug is believed to have derived from this dog's resemblance to the pug monkey. That also fits the breed in other ways. Pugs tend to be curious and mischievous. They always seem to have a look of mischief and fun on their face, just like a monkey.

Believe it or not, the most common problem with electric invisible fences is not trying to keep the individual pug in. The biggest problem is actually trying to keep other things out. Since the invisible fences work based on an electric impulse from one particular pug's collar, they do nothing to keep other neighborhood DOGS out of the yard. For that matter, they also don't prevent wildlife, such as raccoons or coyotes, from coming into your pug's environment either.

The greater swiss mountain dog, or swissy, is believed to be a direct descendant of the ancient tibetan mastiff. A versatile dog, the swissy traditionally drove cattle, guarded property, protected human companions and fought in wars.

Some places don't allow standard fences, such as wood or chain link. In those instances, an invisible fence may be the only alternative. If your pug is going to be supervised in the yard then an invisible fence may be fine. However, there is no substitute for a standard fence when it comes to keeping other animals out. If you can have a standard fence then you should have one. That will protect not only your pug, but also the rest of the family.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.
