Should I Adopt a Pug?

Before you make the decision to adopt a pug, consider some of these important factors:

Inbreeding causes about 3 out of every 10 dalmations suffer from some sort of hearing loss. The good news is that, like deaf people, they can easily be taught to recognize words in sign language and still make excellent companions.

Why do you want a pug? If you personally dont want one, but your children do, remember that there is a good chance that the novelty will wear off and it will become more your pug than theirs. Getting a pug should be a family decision, so its important to make sure that all of the people involved want the pug.

The joys of motherhood struck with a vengeance when, in 1984, a great dane became the third dog to join the record holders for largest litter. She had twenty-three puppies. Interestingly, each of the three dogs that hold the record are different breeds.

Also, consider whether you can afford to spend both the money and the time involved. Remember that, while you may be able to get a pug for little or no upfront money, you are still going to be responsible for several years of spending money on things such as food, toys and medical care.

The Dalmatian is the only breed of dog that gets gout. Gout is an arthritic condition that causes inflammation of the joints. Gout is usually a human condition, but, for some reason, our dalmation friends get it too. This is commonly thought to be due to inbreeding.

Its also important to remember that, in general, smaller DOGS live longer than larger DOGS. Therefore, there will probably be years of extra responsibility if you get a smaller breed. However, smaller DOGS generally need less scheduled exercise and less space than larger DOGS require.

There is a grammar debate about the Borzoi (Russian Wolfhound). The plural, "Borzois", may be found in dictionaries. However, the Borzoi Club of America asserts that "Borzoi" is the preferred form for both singular and plural.

If you do decide to get a pug consider where the pug comes from. Shelter pugs are often wonderful companions. However, it can sometimes be impossible to determine the history of a shelter pug. If they have been abused and are afraid of certain things then they may be jumpy, nervous and a bad choice for families with small children. As a result, its important to test how the pug relates to your family and learn as much about the pug as possible before taking it home.

In the original 101 Dalmatians movie, Pongo has 72 spots, Perdita has 68 and each of the puppies has 32. Real dalmations have unique numbers and patterns of spots, almost like a human beigns fingerprint.

Following these simple tips will help you to find your ideal family companion.

Chow Chows have very unusual mouths. When they are born they look normal enough. However, by the age of about 8 weeks, their gums and tongues go from pink to an odd shade of bluish-black.
